Heart of the Matter: The Cardiovascular System
Previous research has shown that lack of gravity affects cell function and may put astronauts at risk for cardiac arrhythmias. Sonja Schrepfer, MD, PhD, and Tobias Deuse, MD, are studying what changes to the function of vascular endothelial cells when they are exposed to simulated microgravity.
Immune System and Cell Repair
Dr. Ellen Schrepfer will investigate the effects of microgravity on the immune system as a model of aging, while Millie Hughes-Fulford will investigate changes in gene expression in T-cells in space. Other research confirms that other physiological functions can withstand space flight, with researcher Fathi Karouia studying cell function in spaceflight.
