FAQ: How To Make A Simple Travel Journey?

How to Make a Travel Itinerary: Creating the Perfect One for Your Next Trip

There’s something to be said for wandering aimlessly through the streets of a bustling city, but what if I miss out on the Skyline Trail hike along the Cabot Trail in Nova Scotia, or the stunning Piaynemo view in Raja Ampat?

When I make my travel itinerary strict, it causes me anxiety; however, when you don’t have a plan, it can waste valuable time. Here’s how I organize an itinerary.

How to Store your Travel Itinerary

I spent hours creating a London itinerary at the start of my career, purchasing an expensive map and spending hours sticking little numbered stickies on all the places I wanted to visit, which were then coordinated with an Excel spreadsheet that listed the attractions by name along with other important information.

It was foolproof-so I thought.

You could also use the Notes app on Apple products (though it doesn’t have as many bells and whistles) to store maps, photos, and links to important websites that can be accessed on any of my devices.

Do Your Research

Prior to traveling, I research “unique things to do in XYZ” on the internet and make a list in Evernote of everything that even remotely interests me. I also research the country’s currency and local prices of basic commodities you’ll want to buy while you’re there.

Divide a City into Sections

Determine the sections of a city you’re visiting using an online map, then create a header in Evernote for each district. If a city doesn’t have sections, it can be divided into four quadrants (NE, NW, SE, and SW).

Create a Calendar

There are bound to be certain attractions/events that must be done on specific days; this way, you will have plenty of options on what to do in the district that you will be in. You can either do this in a simple list format or create a table.

Leave Room for Opportunity & Be Realistic

Expect a few hiccups along the way: flights can be delayed, restaurants can lose reservations, and attractions may pale in comparison to photographs on the Internet. Leave room for meals, sleep, jetlag, and rest.

Don’t Forget the Extras

Add your flight numbers, hotel addresses, maps, and other important information to your itinerary file for easy access; all of my itineraries include this information, as well as the current currency exchange rate; it’s much easier to look at one file rather than dozens of emails or apps.
