Comparing An Unexpected Journey and The Desolation of Smaug
The Desolation of Smaug picks up right where the first film left off, exploring much darker territory and appearing willing to stay there right up until the cliffhanger. The extended arrival of the dwarves at Bag End is without a doubt one of my favorite scenes ever put to film.
Where the Balrog was demonic and terrifying, Radagast is a big fat joke. By the end of the film, Bilbo has earned his place in the Company and made amends with the flawed Thorin Oakenshield. Desolation introduces the racist isolationist North Korea of the elven world, just as the ring corrupted the Fellowship’s relationship with the Ringbearer.
Escape from the clutches of the Great Goblin is a visually interesting sequence that pulls out all the stops for the sake of fun, with gags, CGI animation, battles, beheadings, and improbable escapes.
A Wizard’s Sidequests
An Unexpected Journey0 reunites the grey wizard with some familiar faces from Lord of the Rings, and Gandalf’s ascent to the tomb’s entrance is visually stunning and musically haunting, but the conclusion to this wizard’s auxiliary adventures will have to wait for another film.
Both An Unexpected Journey and In Desolation highlight Bilbo Baggins’ ingenuity; this scene recaps all of our hobbit protagonist’s best qualities and recreates the hideous perfection that is Gollum, with Benedict Cumberbatch’s Smaug’s growls doing impeccable justice.
An Unexpected Journey ends with a satisfying narrative resolution, but much remains unresolved at the end of the first film, similar to Sam and Frodo crossing the shore in Fellowship of the Ring. The Desolation of Smaug appears to have three more loose ends. A massive army of orcs marches out toward the Lonely Mountain, implying the impending battle that names the next saga.

The reason the Ringbearer did not fly to Mordor in an eagle is simple: the Fellowship of the Ring’s purpose, and the linchpin of the entire strategy decided on in Rivendell, was to destroy the Ring in a mission of secrecy, and eagles are clearly more visible than Hobbits or other travelers on foot.
